Tesla is launching its six-seat Model Y L, specifically developed for the Chinese market, this fall. The company shared the first official images of the new model on Weibo. The Model Y L, which also appears in the new vehicle catalogs published by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), features a larger six-seat body compared to the standard Model Y.
Tesla Model Y L unveiled: 6 seats and 18 cm longer
The new Model Y L, measuring 4,976 mm long, is 179 mm longer than the current five-seat version. It measures 1,920 mm wide, 1,668 mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 3,040 mm. These dimensions offer more living space, particularly in the interior.
Tesla’s technical information indicates that the vehicle will be powered by dual motors, with electric motors producing 142 kW in the front and 198 kW in the rear. The Model Y L, with a top speed of 201 km/h, weighs 2,088 kilograms.
The new SUV is powered by ternary-composition (NMC) batteries provided by LG Energy Solution. While Tesla has not yet officially released pricing information, some Chinese sources suggest the Model Y L will be priced around 400,000 RMB (approximately $55,700).
For comparison, the current five-seat Model Y on sale in China starts at 263,500 RMB for the rear-wheel-drive version, and 313,500 RMB for the long-range all-wheel-drive version. This means the price will likely increase significantly.
The new version’s design changes are also notable. The vehicle’s silhouette features a lengthened rear section to match the longer body. The interior, thanks to repositioned seating, offers seating for six people.
With this model, Tesla appears to be planning to offer a stronger response to China’s large family population and the intense competition in the SUV segment. Following its launch in China, the Model Y L may be available in other markets, such as Europe and Türkiye. However, global launch dates and market details have not yet been announced.
